A Lasting Impact Beyond Service
Since 1994, more than 17,000 Kentuckians have served approximately 26 million hours through AmeriCorps, earning Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards totaling more than $66 million. Higher education institutions and other organizations in Kentucky have received more than $29.3 million in education award payments since 1994.
-
Financial Incentives: Upon successful completion of a service term, AmeriCorps members are eligible for the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. This award can be used to pay for higher education expenses or to repay qualified student loans. Members aged 55 or older at the time of enrollment may transfer their education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child.
-
Access to Employment Opportunities: The Serve Kentucky Foundation is developing a "Service Year friendly" employer certification. This will include an exclusive job board for alumni and commitments from employers to view service as a credential, potentially offering hiring preferences.
-
Competitive Edge for Federal Positions: AmeriCorps VISTA members earn Non-Competitive Eligibility status for one year after service. This status enables them to apply for federal jobs without competing against the general public, significantly streamlining the hiring process.
-
Higher-Education Advantages: Colleges and universities increasingly view service as a valuable asset. Some institutions offer academic credit for service, preferred admissions for alumni, and other wraparound support to help fellows transition into higher education.
